Fed: Boswell says excise decision a win for sugar growers
CANBERRA, Dec 16 AAP - The government's decision to discount excise charges for alternative
fuels was a victory for Australia's sugar industry, National Party Senator Ron Boswell
said today.
Senator Boswell, who has championed an Australian ethanol industry, said he was delighted
with today's cabinet decision.
Prime Minister John Howard has announced excise for LPG and ethanol will be set at
12.5 cents per litre, and will be phased in between July 2008 and July 2012.
The government had been considering an excise rate of up to 26 cents for ethanol and LPG.
"I think it's tremendous," Senator Boswell said.
"I think we will be able to do business with this.
"I would think this should give the sugar industry a boost."
Senator Boswell said the cabinet decision should help secure jobs in Australia's sugar industry.
